Miracles & Direct Communication from God:
Are these things still happening?

Are all the miracles in the Bible true? Does the God who created the universe talk to people? If so, why does He do so little of it today? Is there something that one has to do to get this process going? If God is really all powerful, why is He content to be largely ignored because most people do not believe He is there?

Today's churches and theologians will not give the same answers to the above questions. Indeed, some church denominations teach that there are no miracles or direct communication with God today. Others claim that such things only happen in their church group—that no other church groups experience true miracles. Still other Christians, in a variety or church denominations or non-denominational settings, will tell you that God has spoken to them and has performed miracles in their lives. Some will say they are alive today only because of such a miracle.

Mountain climb similar to my climb in
			the early 1980s

This writer is indeed experienced such a miracle. In the summer of 1980, I went on a backpacking trip with eight other friends from the road-end of St Hwy 168 south of Bishop, Calf. to the St Hwy 180 road-end east of Cedar Grove, Calf. The entire 70 mile trip has no road access of any kind. Nobody had a cell or radio phone. About half way through, we took a rest day and I decided to go for a hike on my own. I violated numerous safety rules: went alone, did not tell anyone where I was going (O.K., I didn't know), did not give a return time, climbed surfaces that required safety gear and attempted maneuvers I had not done before. Had I been injured during the climb, it may have taken days for the others to find me and even more days to get me out. We did not have medical supplies or even extra days supply of food.

I hiked around a large mountain going away from camp and then decided I would try going over the top of it to get back. The back side of the mountain was a huge single slab of rock, maybe 20 times the size of the picture at left (not the site of my climb, just borrowed from This multi-hundred-foot rock face had a huge crack that ran the entire height of it. It was not straight up and down, but maybe at a 75 degree angle. The crack started small—just big enough to cram in fingers and toes—and gradually expanded on the way up. This provided an opportunity to use all sorts of different climbing techniques as the size of the crack expanded. Several two- to three-foot boulders caught in the crack provided challenges to get around, but I was successful.

Near the top of the mountain, the crack widened up considerably and there was a 12-foot boulder stuck in it. It seemed that every way around this boulder had several feet that were back back-sloped—worse than going straight up. I studied it for quite a while. I realized that if I slipped here, I would go bouncing or rolling down several hundred feet on hard mountain until I stopped. I could not see a good route, but I started climbing in the hope that I would see some better holds as I went. I placed my hands wide apart on two distant boulders and pushed with my feet, only to lose my footings on both feet at once. In general, I tend to have stronger legs and weaker arms, and I was amazed that I was holding on at all with arms so wide out and no feet. But I could not look down to see where to put by feet—the place where they were was out of sight due to the back-sloping rock.

I cried out to God for help. Suddenly, I felt like I became stronger and was able to push my body up with both arms, even though they were wide out on tiny handholds. I raised my knee to the point where it had something to rest it on. From there, I was gradually able to get to a position where I could survey the scene and look for a way down. While I had gotten further than I might have thought possible, I realized that I was tempting God by being foolish and this was to be my last death-defying deed of the day. I knew that I did not have the arm strength of such a maneuver and I would never knowingly try it. I realized that God had put us here for a purpose and sometimes protects us from our own foolishness, but it is not our purpose to tempt God (Matthew 4:7).

This writer could certainly relate many other foolish things he has done where deliverance was not complete—where I suffered for weeks or sometimes years with varying amounts of disability from the injuries received. Life is a combination of learning the lessons of our own mistakes, and learning about the love and grace of God.

This writer believes he, as well as many other believers he knows, have received many miracles of God as well as direct communications. Both the Bible and today's experience seem to show that most miracles and communications from God occur when people are dedicating their lives to serving Him. Selfish prayers are rarely answered. This writer's mother had prayed that one of her children would go into the ministry, and it may well be that I had been preserved alive in my foolishness as a result of my mother's prayers, not because I somehow "deserved" to be delivered.

The articles in the bar a right explain the Bible teaching on miracles, healings and communication from God. God is often not there for to help you solve problems that are too expensive or time-consuming for your plans. He is there to help you change your life, to live His ways and to be a blessing to others.

And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart (Jeremiah 29:13).

About the Author

Norman Edwards is the author of all these pages and articles--unless otherwise noted. He has been a life-long Bible student, teacher and author and is now in his 60s. His career, in round numbers is:

The purpose of this site is to encourage everyone everywhere to study and better understand the Bible. Norman has not been a member of any religious denomination or sect since 1995. He does not study to confirm what he or a church group already believes. He reads the Bible, does research and writes what he understands through prayer and the Holy Spirit. Research usually consists of looking for other related scriptures, but also includes the meaning of Hebrew and Greek words and the historical context in which the Scriptures were written.

Yet he also believes that "iron sharpens iron" (Proverbs 27:17) and welcomes corrections and comments about his writing. The peer review of fellow believers has caused him to change his teaching on some subjects.

While Norman has written many hundreds of articles and it will be some years before they are all added to this site. He realizes he will not be able to study every subject of interest before he dies. He realizes this website needs improved organization and new software for a more modern look.

But the purpose of life has never been about doctrinal or technical perfection. It is about learning to love God with all are hearts and to love our neighbor as ourself (Matthew 22:36-40). God gives knowledge and many other spiritual gifts which we should use to His glory (1 Corinthians 12 - 14). But the greatest of these is love! (1 Corinthians 13:13).

This writer encourages Christians everywhere to:

God is very interested in answering prayers about these subjects. He will show you what to do. Be peaceful and gentle with others who are not as gifted or able as you—even with Christians who are clearly in error. God gave us time to bring us to where we are now, and we all still have more to learn!
